  • MY VEGAN STORY – MEET ALICIA WILKINS

Last year I met a lovely woman at the Dungu Book Vegan Meet Up. As soon as I sat next to her and we introduced ourselves, I could feel her positive energy, and her need to be successful in her journey to living a healthy and prosperous lifestyle. Alicia is a woman with many experiences and stories to share. And her plant-based journey, including food slip-ups, and personal health issues are very honest and motivational. There are some instances when we are inspired by the positive actions of others, and there are the rare occasions when the ill health, poor nutritional lifestyle of a family member encourages you to take the necessary steps to improve your own lifestyle, so you are not dealt the same decline in your health and Alicia took those very steps!

  • THE FOOD I ATE ON THE PLANE TRAVELLING TO SHANGHAI

On the 2 February 2017, I boarded a plane with a one-way ticket to Shanghai. with regards to nutrition, I planned my meals from the time I woke up on that day, until what I would eat for the following 2-3 days after my arrival. If there’s one thing about me, I am very organised! I like to know what I’m doing and how I’m doing it, especially when I have to travel and I’m away from my normal routine of preparing my meals at home. The main thing that I needed to consider when preparing my meals was the 15-hour flying time and how the food was going to stay fresh. I knew that I wanted to eat some of my favourite meals for the last time, both on the plane and when I arrived in Shanghai. Continue reading…

  • THE FOODS I WILL MISS WHEN I MOVE TO SHANGHAI

I’m moving to Shanghai at the beginning of February and I can’t wait. I’m excited about the new culture, lifestyle, experiences, language and food I will smell, touch, see, taste and enjoy. However, like any native that emigrates to a new country, there are going to be things that you will miss, especially food!

Now, I don’t have any intention of moving across the world to search for the local chips shop or bakery that can rustle up a salad sandwich, absolutely not. And I will never understand when people go on holiday or move to another country and continue to eat the food of their native land, without giving their host countries delicacies a chance.

Not only do I not survive on processed or packaged foods here in the UK, but going overseas and buying European foods can be expensive and in some instances, hard to come by.  Continue reading…

  • SHAPED LIKE A TOMATO TASTES LIKE A MANGO – PERSIMMON’S

The holiday season saw me indulge in a new fruit I’ve been curious about for some time. I’m sure that we have all been curious about a particular fruit or veg and wondered how it tastes, where it comes from, knowing when it’s edible and how to eat it?!. I’m always having that ‘Oh I must try that’ conversation with myself! And persimmons were on that list of fruits that I needed to try. It looks like a tomato and tastes like a mango, well, that’s what I think. Someone told me that they think it tastes like papaya!

I’m eagerly anticipating my last 3 persimmons to ripen in my kitchen so I can continue my indulgence. I must add these to my favourite fruits list.

I’m heading to China in the next couple of weeks and I’m going to be in Persimmon heaven and I bet they taste even better in their natural habitat.

  • BROWN SUGAR IS JUST WHITE SUGAR IN DISGUISE!

I’m sorry to break it to you, but don’t be fooled, don’t be fooled! Brown sugar is really white sugar. If you thought that by using brown sugar instead of white sugar you were making a healthier choice, you’re not. And I understand and respect your good intentions to make better food choices. Unfortunately, this is another situation where this carbohydrate has been disguised to fool people into thinking they’re making healthier food choices whilst spending more money. And false advertising is also to blame!

  • FOODS THAT CAUSE MUCUS IN THE BODY AND HOW YOU CAN ELIMINATE IT WITH PLANTS!

It’s a very cold winter here in London and we all have to endure people around us coughing, sneezing, spitting up phlegm on the street and complaining about their cold or flu symptoms. Seriously, it can be really irritating and invasive, especially if you’re in a confined space with people who are sick! Some of those same people experience influenza type symptoms throughout the year regardless of the climate, which can be equally as annoying. Yet, they rely on the same over the counter medication and remedies that never work. I’m always amazed by some people’s passivity, ignorance and the look they give me when I mention that the foods they’re eating is a contributing factor to their ill health and dis-ease. I will never understand how some people can be satisfied/content with the state of their poor health, the reliance on medication that doesn’t work, and the reluctance to try plant-based options that may relieve their symptoms and do them no harm! • MELANIN FOOD – FEEDING YOUR BODY VITAMIN D FROM THE SUN

As I write this post, the sun started to appear and stayed in the sky for approximately 20 mins. And then I remembered a conversation I recently had with someone who is of African descent and he was telling me that he was deficient in Vitamin D. So, before we are shrouded in darkness and lose the sun for another year, I’m writing this post specifically for melanated (Black) people and those of you that live further away from the equator and experience significant darkness and even less sunlight. Here in the UK, I feel like we are without proper sunlight for at least 6-7 months out of the year, and what makes it worse is when the clocks go forward and it becomes very dark very early, particularly when the day is already grey and miserable. • INTERVIEW WITH A RAW FOODIE – MEET DOROTHY AKA NATURAL VITA

Tis the season when you start hearing people say ‘I’m going on a diet after Christmas, I’m going to start eating healthier after boxing day/holidays and I’m going to join the gym in January’ or, my New Years Resolution is too…?! It’s interesting, as I’ve never heard anyone say ‘I’m going to change my nutrition NOW, I’m going to adopt a plant-based diet NOW, let me find out how a plant-based or raw food lifestyle can enhance my life NOW’? I have never heard anyone say that and if I’ve ever heard anyone say they’re going to ‘go vegan’ they’re usually following the trend and go into it half-heartedly and fail just as quickly as they started. • ALLERGIES, ALLERGIES, RELIEVE YOUR ALLERGIES

I recently discovered I had an allergy to washing-up gloves?! Well, the latex that makes up the washing-up gloves. Every time after I finished washing up and I took off the gloves I would have this frantic moment of itching and scratching my left hand, including in between my fingers. It was awful and really painful. What made it more unbearable was that it lasted for days and never felt like it was getting any better; And why would it, I wore washing up gloves every day I washed up!

I can only liken the itchy feeling to when you’ve been stung by stinging nettles and no amount of scratching, shea butter, Aloe vera or praying it away makes it feel better. It was a subtle but constant burning feeling under my skin. And it wasn’t like eczema, as I suffered from eczema as a child until I grew out of it as a teenager.

So began the process of elimination!
