As I sit in my kitchen, drinking my usual tall glass of freshly squeezed organic lemon juice. I thought it would be useful to share the reasons why I drink lemons every morning, and why we should all be doing this before we eat breakfast. I always buy organic unwaxed lemons as their grown without chemicals and fertilisers. And I use 1 to 2 whole lemons each morning, depending on the size of the lemons. You don’t have to just drink lemons in the morning, it can be great any time of the day!

I’ve been drinking fresh lemons for a long time, so I can’t remember when I first learned about alkalizing my body, but it was a long time ago, and I’m still reaping the rewards from this amazingly versatile fruit.

MY METHOD This is what I do every morning. As you can imagine, I buy a lot of lemons, so they are usually ripe and ready to be squeezed each morning. But before I squeeze them, I gently massage or roll them around in my hands, which I think stimulates the lemon so I get more juice and nutrients from it.

I use my simple yet trusted manual citrus press and squeeze all the juice from it. (Sometimes you might only get a small amount of juice from 1 whole lemon, that’s why I use 2 lemons) I then add filtered water.

You can be drinking this whilst you prepare your breakfast or get your clothes or bag ready for the day, but ideally wait 15 minutes after drinking it so your body can absorb the nutrients and the lemons can start working!

If you have the time, you can chop up a few lemons, including the rind (skin or peel), yes, I said the lemon rind and pop them in the blender and make a large jug of lemon juice. Don’t worry, I’ll be writing a post on eating the rind of fruits soon. As the rind of lemons contain as much as 5 to 10 times more vitamins than the lemon juice itself!

I learned about the health benefits that some plant-based foods, such as lemons, limes, and aloe vera leaf can do to raise the Ph levels in the body and keep your environment (internally) oxygenated and free from dis-ease and illness.

I know you might think that lemons are acidic, which they are, so how can they provide an alkaline environment? well, here’s the answer to your question as well as some of the other reasons why I drink lemons in the morning.

RAISE YOUR PH LEVELS A Ph less than 7 is considered acidic and many people who consume animal produce, highly processed foods, sugary foods, preserved condiments and anything baked with white flour are more than likely to have low Ph levels and may be more susceptible to regular illnesses, skin conditions and prolonged dis-ease within the body. Lemons are acidic in their natural state, but once consumed they turn the environment (body) alkaline as the body metabolises them. Your ideal alkalinity is 7.30 to 7.45, but if you eat a regular whole-foods, plant-based diet then you’re more than likely to have a gut environment that is already at these levels, as most plant-based foods are alkaline.

Here’s a short list of foods that are alkalizing, which you can combine together, pop in your blender to create a great tasting alkaline juice or smoothie.

BOOST YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM Lemons are high in vitamin C and potassium. Vitamin C is great for fighting influenza and potassium stimulates brain and nerve function and helps control blood pressure.
IMPROVES DIGESTION Especially if you drink it in the morning before breakfast, it may reduce heartburn and bloating by loosening up trapped toxins.  As well as vitamin C, lemons contain antimicrobial properties, which combined may prevent episodes of gastrointestinal infections.
HELPS WITH WEIGHT LOSS Lemons are high in pectin fibre, which helps fight hunger cravings. It also has been shown that people who maintain a more alkaline diet lose weight faster.

CLEARS AND BRIGHTENS YOUR SKIN I believe I can attest to this statement. With persistence and patience, I started to notice my skin getting clearer and brighter from not only drinking lemon water daily but using a Black Soap  for my skin, which contains lemons. The vitamin C helps decrease wrinkles and blemishes,  purges toxins from the blood which helps keep skin clear and bright.

HYDRATES THE LYMPH SYSTEM After you’ve been asleep for 8 hours or more, this glass of lemon water, whether you drink it warm or cold helps to kick-start the day on a hydrated note, which helps prevent dehydration and adrenal fatigue. When your body is dehydrated, or deeply dehydrated (adrenal fatigue), it doesn’t perform or function properly, which leads to toxic buildup, stress, constipation and the list goes on. Your adrenals are two small glands that sit on top of your kidneys and along with your thyroid, which creates energy. They also secrete important hormones, including aldosterone. Aldosterone is a hormone secreted by your adrenals which, regulates water levels and the concentration of minerals, like sodium, in your body, helping you stay hydrated.

I challenge you to adopt this healthy approach of drinking a cup of freshly squeezed lemon water every morning before you eat breakfast, and you will definitely see and feel radical changes to your body.

Let me know if you drink lemons in the morning or what you use to alkalise your body.

    Enjoy x
